The Peter Stanley Memorial Award

The Peter Stanley Memorial Fund has been established to give an annual award to a Fine Art student at Kensington & Chelsea College. We hope to raise sufficient funds to make the award a fitting and lasting tribute to Peter’s dedication to art and art students. If you would like to make a donation in memory of Peter, please make cheques payable to 'KCC Peter Stanley Fund' c/o Sue White, Secretary, Department of Visual Arts, Kensington & Chelsea College, Hortensia Road, London SW10 0QS (Tel 020 7573 3600)

2007 Award

The 2007 Peter Stanley Memorial Award was presented to HNC Fine Art student Katie Comerford by Simon Betts, Foundation Course Leader at Wimbledon College of Art, and a close friend and colleague of Peter's at KCC. Simon, a painter whose work explores the relation of the materiality of painting with the perceptual experience of the viewer, commended Katie's breadth of ambition in the re-imagining of sculptural tradition within her installation.

Simon also commended the work of Tom Lamb, HNC Fine Art, and Fiona Long, Foundation.

2006 Award

The inaugural award was presented to Olivia Freeman by Peter's ex-tutor Gerard Wilson (Head of Sculpture at Chelsea College of Art) at the private view of the end-of-year student exhibition at The Hortensia Gallery. Gerard awarded the £300 prize to Olivia in recognition of the quality of her sound sculpture installation, in particular for its quirky humour that he felt Peter would have especially appreciated.

The award ceremony took place in front of a small exhibition of Peter's work, and the evening was accompanied by music from Peter's colleagues Steve Mepstead and Robert Underwood, ending with a party in true Peter fashion... as Gill said, "He was passionate about celebrating students’ achievements through ever more spectacular end of year shows – including the music, barbecues and dancing."
